Isabelle reflects upon her experience at the Language House

Salut!
Thanksgiving break is just around the corner meaning exams and winter break are soon to follow as well. This makes me realize that my third and final semester in the language house is coming to a close. I look back and think about how such a place of consistent comfort has brought such different experiences. It is astonishing what different communities result from year to year and even from semester to semester. Only could the ACH Language House program support such diversity; never to get old and always offering something new.

My three semesters in the French House has prepared me well for my semester in Switzerland next spring. I am confident in my ability to engage with francophone colleagues in Geneva, Paris, and Brussels and this I must attribute to the French House.

I have met unforgettable people for whom I hold the upmost respect. I love that the in-house community extends itself beyond Boldt hall as I find myself greeting the house members in French throughout campus and college town. The memories I hold of the French House are completely unique to my experiences at Cornell. For these things, I am endlessly thankful.

To everyone on the Language House, and the French House in particular, thank you for everything that you offered me. Enjoy the next two and a half weeks of classes and the upcoming holidays and good luck on exams and with next semester. I think I can safely assume that next semester will bring a whole new community to the French House as that has been my experience over the past three semesters, an experience which is, in my opinion, one of the greatest qualities of the language house.

Salut,

Laissez-moi commencer en disant que j'adore la maison francaise. C'est plus bien que ce que j'ai imaginé et Valentine est une très bonne <> . Nous avons regardé <> une soirée et tout le monde aurait dû le voir!!! Aussi nous jouons au foot quelques fois, la maison d'arabe pense qu'ils sont meilleurs, mais c'est faux. Aussi, nous continuons à essayer de rassembler de l'argent pour notre voyage à Strasbourg pendant les vacances de printemps et vraiment j'espère que nous pourrons y aller, ce sera une grande expérience éducative.

Pan de Muertos...

Querido ‘blog’,

Esta semana, nosotros, los residentes de la Casa de Español, celebramos “Jalowin” (asi no se escribe pero me da igual) y luego el Dia de los Muertos. Para celebrar la bellísima tradición al estilo Mexicano, Barbará (ό como le llamamos nosotros: B. Diddy) sugirió que horneáramos un pan de muertos.

Alentados por el ánimo de Barbara, obtuvimos una receta de internet y fuimos a comprar los ingredientes necesarios. Esta es la receta que seguimos:

ngredientes

4 sobres de levadura
1/4 de taza de agua tibia
6 tazas de harina
1 lata de leche condensada
5 huevos
5 yemas de huevo
1 ¼ tazas de mantequilla
2 cucharadas de agua de azahar
2 huevos para barnizar
1 ¼ tazas de azúcar

Preparación:

Precalienta el horno a 200 grados Fahrenheit. Disuelve la levadura en el agua, agrega 1/2 taza de harina, forma una pequeña bola y deja reposar 15 minutos. Mezcla la harina restante con los huevos, la leche condensada, las yemas, la mantequilla y el agua de azahar. Amasa todos los ingredientes y agrega la levadura. Vuelve a amasar y deja reposar en un lugar tibio 1 hora hasta que la masa aumente su tamaño al doble. Divide la masa en 4 partes y a cada una quítale una pequeña porción que usarás para los adornos del pan. Redondea cada una de las partes y colócalas en un recipiente horneable y engrasado. Con la masa restante haz lágrimas y huesitos y pégalos al pan con un poco de los huevos para barnizar batidos. Barniza el pan con este huevo y espolvorea el azúcar. Hornea 25 ó 30 minutos.

麻将大赛！

上上个星期，我们中文之家的同学一起到RPCC参加了麻将大赛。
这次比赛是为了宣传有关肝炎在亚洲国家的状况和为救助
亚洲国家的肝炎病人捐款。
麻将一种在中国很流行的娱乐活动，老年人和年轻人都喜欢玩。
不同地区的麻将有不同的规则，在网络游戏中也很流行。
Ka Ming, Yong, Jia, Daniel 和Sara都参加了比赛，但是只有Ka Ming
进入了最后的决赛，并且获得了第一名！第一名的奖品是一个
麻将牌“青发”的枕头：）

Last week the Japanese Language House celebrated Halloween!

On Wednesday, Whitney, Cloe, and Tina entered the Alice Cook House costume contest dressed as a witch, a mad scientist, and a gameboy. None of them won, but they had a really fun time at the Cook House Halloween dinner.

Whitney went all out for Halloween by decorating her room from top to bottom with spider webs, lights, skeletons, pumpkins, etc. She also participated in various Alice Cook House Halloween events: she went pumpkin picking, attended the Halloween Party, and did in-house Trick-or-Treating by giving out candy to people who visited her room. Whitney loves Halloween!

La maison française a été tellement amusante jusqu'ici. Récemment on a fait une randonnée au bord des belles gorges d'Ithaca ensemble, et notre Native Speaker nous a appris quelques chansons en français, du vocabulaire des animaux, plantes, et de la nature en général. Pas mal des membres de la maison française parlent allemand aussi, deswegen haben wir auch an den deutschen Abendessen bzw Veranstaltungen teilgenommen! Et sans oublier le match de volley où on a (presque) gagné! C'est énormément utile pour moi de travailler mon français avant de partir pour la Suisse, car je vais y être étudiant d'échange le semestre prochain. Bien que je ne suive pas de course de Français ce semestre, j'ai realisé que ma capacité à parler s'est améliorée!

大家好！我是中文之家的邸婉舒。上个周末，王葭带着大家一起做了菠萝饭。我们玩得很开心，而且菠萝饭做得也很成功。大家都帮了忙，我们还发现Dan像个很巧的厨师，非常快地把菠萝挖空了，比王葭还快。我们把饭和菠萝炒好后，把它们都放到菠萝的皮里，然后又放到烤箱里靠了一会儿。我们做完以后，发现自己做得菠萝饭还不错呢，很惊讶！吃完饭后，我们还可以吃点心, 一个巧克力蛋糕，因为上星期日也是Sara的生日。

Hello everyone! This is Wanshu Di from Chinese Language House. Last weekend, everyone worked together to made pineapple rice! Everyone enjoyed cooking, and the pineapple rice turned out to be a success. Everyone helped out and we found out that Dan is actually like a master chef, and we all watched him carve out a pineapple way faster than Jia. Then we fried the rice and pineapple, then placed them all into the pineapple skin and baked it. When we finished, we were surprised that our pineapple rice tasted pretty good. After we ate, we also had dessert, a cake, courtesy of Sara, since it was her birthday last Sunday.

みなさん、こんにちは。二年生のチェンです。先週、日本語館はとても忙しかったです。宿題と試験と日本へ行くための準備の上に、ジュッサの縁日に行って、国語館のタレントショーにも参加しました。

縁日は土曜日にあって、アペルにあったから、ちょっと不便だったけど、とても楽しかったです。ヤマタイがたいこの演奏をし、とてもにぎやかでした。日本の食べ物もたくさんありました。いろいろな食べ物があって、クレープとか、たこ焼きとか、お好み焼きとか、焼きそばがありました。おいしかったです。でも、今年より去年の方がゲームと別の事がもっとありました。

国語館のタレントショーは日曜日にありました。わたしたちはとても大きい折り紙の鶴を作りました。鶴を作っている時に興奮していたが、折り紙の四角の紙を作っていた時の方がもっと楽しかったと思います。馬鹿のように飾っていました。

Hello everyone! This is Tina, the sophomore. Last week, the Japanese house was incredibly busy. In addition to homework, exams, and the proposal for the trip to Japan, we also went to JUSA’s Ennichi and we also went to the Language House’s talent show.

Ennichi was on Saturday. Because Ennichi took place in front of Appel, it was a little inconvenient but it was very fun. Yamatai gave a concert and played the taiko drums; it was very lively. There was a lot of Japanese food. There were several types of food, for example, crepes, octopus balls, a kind of Japanese pancakes, and fried noodles. It was very delicious. But, this year did not have as many games and activities last year’s Ennichi.

The Language House’s talent show was on Sunday. We, the Japanese Language House made a very large crane for the show. Making the crane was very fun but I think the time we made and decorated the square piece of origami paper was more enjoyable. We decorated the paper like idiots (silliness).

And that’s it..

Cooking tip (from a renowned French chef): "Snapples" are what goes best with crêpes à la française, on the contrary, drinking them with chorizo would have been a blatant error of taste,an error which our cooking experts avoided by getting rid of all the drinks...

Hiking trip... Guided by the brave King of the Mountains Adam and his majestuous wooden scepter, the French House explored the depth of the "Monkey Run", a well-known hiking trail. Although we sympathized for the poor horses who were unfairly banned from this steep path(bias!), I enjoyed the beautiful scenery and I was extremely impressed by Robert's outstanding accuracy in German, Alison's ability to overcome her fears (on the bridge for example), Jacob's melodious voice (and his extensive knowledge of Disney movies and the Sound of Music) and Adam's ease in the realm of Mother Nature. I would also like to personally thank Robert's car which is more and more becoming a fully-fledged resident of the French House and should start attending our dinners!

Thank you Adam for that wonderful afternoon!

Cette semaine à la maison française nous avons fait quelque chose vraiment amusements. Chaque semaine nous nous réunissons depuis une heure pour faire quelque chose vraiment "Français," cette semaine, nous avons cuit des crêpes! Nous avons cuit les crêpes savoureux et dessert, la différence est dans la farine. La meilleure partie était le Nutella! La semaine dernière nous sommes allés a une randonnée, la semaine avant nous ait regardé un film, il y a toujours des activités d'amusement ici. Les activités sont ouvertes à chacun, donc si vous aimez parler français, vous devriez visiter la maison française!

¡Hola a todos!

Espero que estén bien y que hayan tenido una semana productiva y divertida. Esta semana solo les quiero contar acerca de nuestra actividad (ya que Barb está demasiado ocupada para escribir esto [ ! ]). Esta semana fuimos al Festival de las Manzanas de Ítaca. Tuvimos que caminar ya que no teníamos ni idea de cuando pasaban los autobuses, pero esto resultó ser un poco mejor pues nos diό la oportunidad de hablar en el camino y de tomar muchas fotos artísticas de Ítaca.

En el festival, nos paseamos por todos los puestos y nos detuvimos a ver algunos actos de malabaristas callejeros que, debo decir, nos decepcionaron. Pero la comida estuvo excelente. Desde las manzanas, hasta las costillitas azadas estaban de ‘rechupete’ (como decimos en México).

Después del festival, preparamos unos tentempiés para antes de la cena de la Casa. Compramos jamón Serrano, Chorizo español y queso de cabra para darle un sazón español a un atardecer romántico. Solo nos falto un vino italiano o español para acompañar, quizás Chianti o inclusive un Rioja.

Estas son algunas de las fotos que tomamos el sábado durante nuestra visita al festival. ¡Aquí pueden ver a algunos de mis niños (mis residentes) mas felices!

talent show

雖然我覺得今年的talent show 沒有去年的那麼成功，但還是漫有趣的．　今年總是覺得大家都比較忙；talent show這個週末剛好有別的節目，接下來的星期大家也都開始考試了．去年好像也有在 Alice Cook 的佈告欄上貼廣告，今年就沒有，所以感覺上今年比較少人來看．　去年端出來的食物也比較好吃．．．但是這一點很有可能只是應為我不喜歡甜食．今年中文之家又演了一場戲劇，特點是中文之家之外的人也被拉進來當演員了．我覺得這樣子，不只單獨一個家來合作表演，對不同語言之家之間的關係有很大的幫助．問題就是音響；如果明年還打算設計個talent show的話，得找個辦法把音樂放大聲一點．　

Although I don’t think this year’s talent show was as big a hit as last year’s it was still very entertaining. The problem was that everybody seemed busier this year; there were other events going on during the weekend that the talent show took place and prelims were starting the following Monday. Also, I didn’t see fliers advertising the show on the Alice Cook bulletin board this year – that might have contributed to the smallish audience we had. I did like the food better last year as well…but that’s probably just because I don’t like sweets as much. This year’s Mandarin House also had a play. What’s special about this year was that people not belonging to the House also acted in it. I think mixed house performances like this do a lot to make inter-house relationships stronger. The only problem is the sound – if we do another talent show next year, we need to find a way to make whatever music performers need louder.

Bubble Tea ボバ茶

Hi guys! Crystal here, first time resident of the Language House. I'm a sophomore and actually, to be honest, I have the worst Japanese out of all the Japanese House residents. Hehe. I'm only in 201 right now. So come to the house dinners, even if your Japanese isn't that great either, and we can all try to improve together =D

Albert already blogged about our trip, so this time I'll talk about our conversation hour from last week - going to collegetown to get bubble tea! We started out pretty late, after 9 on Sunday night. Sighting a bus, we ran to catch it since we were lazy (ironically). At the store, there were tons of people so we had to wait a super long time to get our drinks, but it was so worth it. And the walk home was great since it was nice and windy out. Since we got home late, we didn't have time to do much after (everyone's swamped with work), but hanging around the store to watch CJ7 and just chatting about random things was really fun.

This weekend, there are more events coming up, so watch out for the next post by my lovely roommate about Ennichi and the House-wide talent show!

Albertさんはもうトリップの事を書いたから、今度先週の “conversation hour” の話しをします。ボバ茶を買いにCollegetownに行きました！ちょっと時間遅くて、日曜日の夜の九時過ぎでした。歩いていたらバスを見たから、間に合うように急いで走りました。怠け者でしたからね。お店にたくさんの人がいたからとっても長い時間待ちましたけど甲斐がありました。帰て歩いて時、風が強くて気持ちよかったです。遅く帰たので、他のことをするの時間がなかったけど(皆たくさん宿題があるため)、お店でCJ7を見ながらいろいろなことを話してすごく楽しかったです。

この週末もっとエベントがあるから，かわいいルームメイトTinaの縁日とタレントショーについての次のブログポストを楽しみにしてくださいね！

Arabic House Cookout

Sunday the Arabic House cooked. We cooked food from the Middle East such as falafel, meat, and fatoosh. Everything was excellent!

Spanish House is Back

Dear Community,

Here is the long-awaited Spanish House entry to the lively experiment that is the Language House Blog. After giving much thought to what I would talk about, how to plan it, and how to deliver it, I came up with the idea of just writing whatever came out of my mind after drinking 3 cans of lemon-lime soda. So… This first publication is going to be about my impression of the New Spanish House.

If you were involved with Language House last year, you know of the reputation that the Spanish House carried: cool, sexy, uninhibited, and spontaneous. Like a good kiss. So, many of you out there must be wondering what the new makeup of the Spanish House has made of reputation. After all, the Native Speaker is the same, Cecilia is still our faculty fellow, the building is (mostly) intact, and only the residents have changed.

Here are my thoughts so far:

1. We have too many nice kids this year. Seriously, all the Spanish House residents are really really really nice kids, the enthusiastic kind whose faces light up whenever we plan a new event or mention the possibility of cooking a traditional Latin American dish. These kids are soooo good that they can take coming in 3rd place in our volleyball tournament and still be happy and peppy even as their Native Speaker fumes in anguish by the corner. (oh wait! Not all of them. I have one bad apple who brings balance to things too!)

2. The Trip: Well, it looks like it won’t be happening again for Spanish House. But rather than engage in a venomous rant, I hereby state my commitment to taking my house SOMEWHERE this year. Come back in a month to see where… could be fun!

3. The Atmosphere: Oh man, the atmosphere this year is so different from last year that it’s hard to say whether it’s better or worse. Actually, it’s pretty good. I think all of my residents know each other by know (except for the bad apple!) and they are all really really friendly. It’s a good atmosphere at dinner, very funny people in the House this year.

Yeah, that’s as much as I want to say for now. Come knock on my door!

みんなさん、こんにちは。こっちはラングェージ・ハウスのチューです。僕はもう一年ラングウジ・ハウスに住むことになって今年で二年目を始めることになるのです。今年のメンバーは去年の人数より多くて、元気がいっぱいだし、おもしろいから今年ここに住むのがもっと楽しい事になるみたいのです。それに、今回の日本語館がニューヨーク市には行かなくて、僕が最も行きたい所に行きます。それは何処だと思いますか？もちろん、日本ですよ！春休みに日本語館の七人が京都へ行くつもりですよ！　でも、その前にたくさんやらなくてはいけない事があります。例えば、お金を集める事、このトリップのためのリサーチを書く事など、全て京都行くために必要な事なので難しくて大変の事になっています。でも、今この学期がまだ始まったところなので、みんなのエンナジがまだ高いからこの時のうちで全部難しい事をしておいたら絶対に日本行けると思うよ。みんな、頑張って！！！

Hello everyone, this is Chiu from the Language House. I have lived in the Language House for one year, and I’m starting my second year in the house. This year we have two more members than last year, and the new members are vibrant and a lot of fun to be with, so I think this year will be lots of fun living with them. In addition, this time the Japanese Language House is not just going to New York City, but going to a place I’ve always wanted to go. Why don’t guess where that place is? Of course, it is Japan. This spring break, from the Japanese Language house, all 7 members are planning to go to Kyooto! But before that, there are many things that must be done, for example: to gather money for the trip, and to write a research proposal for the trip…all of these things must be done before traveling, hence, it’s a hard and arduous task. However, since the semester just started, and everyone still had lots of energy, I think if we can do all these sticky stuffs in advance, then we can definitely go to Japan. Everyone, Good Luck!!!!

Housewide Volleyball Tournament!

下午下了雨，但是大家的兴致很高。最后，阵容最完整的中文之家取得了冠军！
Dan是我们的队长，Zhaonan是我们的发球机器，还有jonathan令人印象深刻的脸！

Last weekend we had a housewide volleyball tournament and all the five houses
participated in it! Although it rained a little bit during the afternoon, we still had
lots of fun together!

Our Mandarin house won the first place in the end. Dan was our captain, Z was soooooo
good at serving, and we also had Jonathan's impressive face painting...
